An ATA carnet works when it is correctly stamped at every border: on export, import and transit. The goods should return complete and unchanged, and the carnet should be properly discharged. If anything is missing or the carnet is not discharged, customs and tax charges can arise and are covered from the security.
Keep in mind
- Each border means a customs stamp on the right carnet voucher.
- Watch the full set of vouchers: export, import, transit, return.
- Missing goods or a missing stamp can mean charges and loss of the deposit.
- Stay within the carnet validity (usually 12 months).
