Telford International Centre lies in Telford, Shropshire, on its own secure campus with private access roads, close to the M54. The venue publishes separate postcodes for its front and rear gates, so the driver is given a gate postcode rather than a venue postcode. Its three exhibition halls sit on one level and share the same maximum height, which makes vehicle choice simpler than at most multi-hall venues. We carry stands and exhibits here from Poland.
Who runs the venue
The venue belongs to Southwater Event Group, an independent family-run business that also owns the hotels immediately around it and an in-house technical production arm. That has a practical consequence: traffic management, security and stewarding are run by the venue itself rather than by an outside contractor with exclusive rights. Arrangements for entry are therefore made directly with the venue and the organiser, without a third intermediary. Getting there, and the two gates
The venue describes itself as close to the M54 and says the drive from the motorway takes minutes, but it does not publish a junction number, so neither will we. The M54 leaves the M6 north of Birmingham, so the route from the continent usually runs via the M25 or M40 and then the M6, or through the Midlands when entering by the east coast ports. On site there are two gates: a front gate at the venue main address and a rear gate with its own postcode. The venue publishes both codes and the exact gate locations. The transport order carries whichever code the organiser instructions designate for freight traffic, because that is usually not the gate visitors use.
Three halls, one level, the same height
This is the venue biggest advantage for delivery and it is worth appreciating, because it is not common in England. There are three interlinking exhibition halls, all on the ground floor and all with the same maximum height, reaching twelve metres. There is no jump from three and a half metres in one hall to eleven in another, as happens on agricultural grounds. The largest hall has direct vehicle access and a dedicated off-road loading area, and the other two have their own separate external access points.
One exception has to be known, though. Besides the halls the venue has conference suites, one of which is on the ground floor and also has direct vehicle access and its own loading area, while another is on the first floor with no vehicle access at all. If a stand or display falls in that suite, the load goes in differently and that is planned from the start rather than discovered on site. So at enquiry stage we ask for the name of the room, not only the name of the venue.
A secure campus: what that gives the driver
The venue describes itself as a private and secure site, with around fifteen hundred parking spaces and four hotels on or beside it. For a carrier on an international run that is a concrete difference from urban venues: the vehicle does not stand on a street with waiting restrictions, and the driver has somewhere to take a rest period without hunting for a lorry park ten miles away. Waiting rules and whether a vehicle may stay overnight are confirmed with the organiser before arrival, since the venue does not publish them generally.
Clean air zones: none in Telford
Telford does not appear on the British list of charging clean air zones, which covers Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield and Tyneside. The route matters as much as the destination, though: the Birmingham zone covers the centre inside the A4540 ring road and applies to heavy vehicles, while an approach to Telford on the M6 and M54 does not touch it. What to settle before arrival
To the show organiser: hall number or room name, the designated gate and its postcode, how vehicles are booked in and passes collected, whether a vehicle may enter the hall for that stand, who supplies the forklift and where the vehicle goes after unloading. We do not quote hours or dates, because the organiser sets them separately for each edition and they change from year to year. What we do at our end
We collect stands and exhibits in Poland, and from exhibitors in Czechia, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary we gather the load through our hub. The Kielce base sits about 4 km from the fairground, a few minutes away, works around the clock and lets a stand be assembled into one consignment before departure. A groupage vehicle waits for the next scheduled line departure. On the British side the load usually passes through a cross-dock at our warehouse in Milton Keynes, giving two transhipments across the route. At the venue we deliver to the handover point and the venue equipment takes over. We commit to an hour at the gate rather than an hour of unloading, because the sequence inside the grounds is set by the venue.
Groupage or a dedicated vehicle
The threshold runs at roughly a third of a trailer, about twelve pallets. Telford is a venue where a dedicated vehicle gives less advantage than in London, because the approach is simple and unloading happens on one level. For smaller stands, groupage with a run from the buffer performs very well here. For a tall or heavy exhibit a dedicated vehicle wins, because a hall twelve metres high allows things that cannot be split into consignments.
