FTL or LTL — when a full load and when groupage

How to choose between FTL and LTL on the route to the UK, comparing cost, transit time and the number of handlings.

FTL means hiring a whole truck for one load; LTL is groupage where you pay for the space you use. Choose FTL for more pallets, urgency and goods sensitive to handling. LTL pays off for one to a few pallets when you accept consolidation and a slightly longer transit. Volume, time and risk decide.

What to compare

  • Cost — FTL a flat price per truck, LTL per space; at low volume LTL is cheaper.
  • Time — FTL direct, LTL longer through consolidation.
  • Handling — FTL no repack, LTL with terminal handlings.
Break-even the more pallets and the lower the tolerance for handling, the sooner FTL beats LTL.

We match the mode to the load. See services and destinations.
