Eden Court stands on Bishop's Road in Inverness, postcode IV3 5SA, beside the River Ness. It is a theatre and arts centre that describes itself as the largest and most versatile conference venue in the north of Scotland. In its technical documents it appears as Eden Court Highlands. Loading happens at the stage door at the rear of the building, and the venue publishes door dimensions and a dock height, which at venues of this size is rare.
The dimensions the venue actually publishes
The technical specification for the largest space, the Empire Theatre, contains three figures that matter to a carrier. The load-in doors measure 3180 by 1890 millimetres and open onto the rear stage. Unloading takes place in the car park, where the venue marks two bays to fit three 45 foot trailers. The dock height from the car park is given as a range from 83 to 97 centimetres.
That range matters more than it looks. A standard trailer has its floor at around 120 centimetres, so an edge several dozen centimetres lower does not allow a straightforward run off the trailer onto the dock. On top of that the height varies along the yard by fourteen centimetres, which means the position of the vehicle relative to the edge matters and levelling is not automatic. The second constraint is the doors themselves. Just under 1.9 metres of clear width rules out any panel or structure wider than that, no matter how much room there is inside. The approach: two trunk roads and a bridge
The venue publishes a detailed set of directions, and they run purely on trunk roads. From the A9 northbound you turn left at the Longman roundabout before the Kessock Bridge, continue along the dual carriageway straight across the following roundabouts, take the third one across the River Ness, then Kenneth Street, turn right onto the A82 and left into Bishop's Road. Southbound you take the third exit at the Longman roundabout after the Kessock Bridge and continue the same way. For satnav the venue gives IV3 5SA and Bishop's Road.
No motorway appears in that description, because this part of Scotland has none. For a load from Poland, Inverness is the furthest practically reachable point on the route, and the A9 from the Perth area runs through hill country with a varying cross-section. A theatre, not an exhibition hall
Eden Court runs the Empire Theatre as its largest space, alongside a second auditorium, the OneTouch Theatre, a cinema, studio spaces and a gallery. The venue calls itself the largest and most versatile conference venue in the north of Scotland and lists recurring events including the Northern Meeting Piping Competition, the Inverness local Mòd, a whisky festival and university graduations.
Two things follow. First, exhibition space is secondary to the performance function, so a display spreads across the foyer, the gallery and the rooms rather than sitting in one open hall. Second, the performance calendar takes priority, so build-up windows are often overnight or short. Zones and parking
Inverness has no low emission zone. Scotland operates four of them, in the city centres of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The venue has a pay and display car park at the rear, charged around the clock, with a public car park by the cathedral next door. It publishes no weight or height limits; the real constraint is the drive through the city centre and across the bridge over the Ness.
What to settle before arrival
- The room name, because the Empire Theatre and the OneTouch Theatre have separate technical specifications.
- The width of the widest item against doors of 3180 by 1890 millimetres.
- The unloading method against a dock edge of 83 to 97 centimetres.
- Whether the vehicle needs a tail lift.
- Booking a bay, since the venue lists two fitting three trailers.
- The build-up window against the performance calendar.
What we do at our end
We collect stands and exhibits in Poland, and from exhibitors in Czechia, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary we gather the load through our hub. At the Kielce base, about 4 km from the fairground and open around the clock, we assemble a stand into one consignment before departure. A groupage vehicle waits for the next scheduled line departure. Clearances run in cooperation with the customs agencies we work with regularly on both sides. At an address this remote we almost always use a cross-dock at our warehouse in Milton Keynes: the final leg is then driven by a vehicle matched to the door and the dock rather than the one that carried the load from the continent. We commit to an hour at the gate rather than an hour of unloading.
Groupage or a dedicated vehicle
The threshold runs at roughly a third of a trailer, about twelve pallets, but at Eden Court it is not volume that decides but the door width and the edge height. A load made of items fitting within 1.89 metres of width travels comfortably as groupage. A wider load calls for a redesigned stand rather than a bigger vehicle.
