Poland to Manchester and the north of England: M6, M62 and Trafford Park

Routes via the M6 and M62, deliveries to Trafford Park and the industrial estates between Liverpool and Leeds, plus the current clean air status in Manchester.

We run transport from Poland to Manchester and the north of England as LTL groupage from 1 pallet and as full FTL loads. Off the Channel crossing the route usually follows the M25, then the M6 or the M1 and M62. Greater Manchester has no charging clean air zone today, and we plan deliveries around specific industrial estates, Trafford Park first among them.

The route north

From Dover or Folkestone the vehicle takes a stretch of the M25, then one of two ways: the M40 and M6 through the Midlands, or the M1 and M62 through Yorkshire. The M62 ties Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds into one corridor, so a single trunk vehicle can serve several drops along the way. We quote journey times as estimates, because they depend on traffic around Birmingham and on the M62 itself, one of the busiest motorways in the country.

Where we deliver: Trafford Park and the M62 corridor

The most common industrial address in the conurbation is Trafford Park, the first planned industrial estate in the world and still the largest area of its kind in Europe, with well over a thousand businesses on site. Its internal roads take trailers comfortably, but individual plants receive goods at different hours, so booking in is standard. Beyond that we deliver to warehouses along the M62 and M60, to Salford, Warrington and Rochdale, and further north to Leeds and Bradford. Trade fair deliveries to the Manchester Central venue are covered in our separate article on transport to Manchester Central.

Clean air: no charges in Manchester

Greater Manchester planned a charging CAZ but ultimately dropped it: the government approved an investment led plan with no charges, and today no lorry pays to enter anywhere in the conurbation (as at August 2026). Other cities differ, for example Bradford and Sheffield run their own zones, though none treats lorries the way the London LEZ does. Which UK zones affect goods vehicles and what they cost is collected in our guide to UK clean air zones.

What travels north

  • E-commerce warehouses and retail distribution centres along the M62: groupage pallets on fixed receiving slots.
  • Food industry and packaging: repeat pallet batches, often on EPAL exchange.
  • Manufacturing and components: from single pallets to complete machinery sets.
  • Backloads to Poland: components and trade goods, which helps keep rates sharp both ways.

How to count trailer space is explained in our piece on pallets and loading metres, and the whole process in the guide transport to England step by step.

Booking in: the most common cause of a failed delivery in the north

Warehouses along the M62 run on slots. A vehicle without a booking queues or is turned away and comes back the next day, and the cost of that run does not disappear. Booking the window usually belongs to the consignee or the shipper, because they hold the account in the warehouse booking system, and this is exactly where the most common misunderstanding arises: each side assumes the other will do it. So on a first delivery to a new warehouse we ask outright who books the slot, what the consignee's order reference is and whether the site needs the vehicle registration in advance.

The last mile outside the conurbation

  • Roads across the Pennines and around the Peak District can be narrow, with weight restrictions and weak bridges, and satellite navigation set for a car will happily lead a trailer into a dead end; we confirm rural addresses with the consignee before departure.
  • Some plants on older industrial estates have gates and yards laid out for shorter vehicles, so a full trailer cannot always turn under its own power.
  • On runs continuing further north we sequence the drops so the furthest point does not dictate the hour of the first one.
  • In winter we allow for closures on the trans-Pennine passes and keep a diversion plan ready.

Frequently asked questions

Does a truck pay a clean air charge in Manchester?
No. Greater Manchester planned a charging CAZ but ultimately abandoned it: the government approved an investment-based plan without charges, and today no fee is paid for a truck entering anywhere in the conurbation. Current as of August 2026. Routes through other cities can differ, for example Bradford or Sheffield have their own zones, so we check the requirements for each specific delivery route.
Which route does transport from Poland to Manchester take?
After leaving the crossing at Dover or Folkestone the truck takes a stretch of the M25 and then one of two ways: the M40 and M6 through the Midlands, or the M1 and M62 through Yorkshire. The M62 ties Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds into one corridor, so a single linehaul truck can serve several unloadings along the way. Journey time is quoted approximately, as it depends on traffic around Birmingham and on the M62 itself, one of the country's busiest motorways.
Where do deliveries in Manchester and northern England most often go?
The conurbation's most common industrial address is Trafford Park, the world's first planned industrial estate and still the largest of its kind in Europe, with over a thousand active companies; individual plants receive goods at their ramps at different hours, so booking-in is standard. Beyond that we deliver to warehouses along the M62 and M60, to Salford, Warrington and Rochdale, and further north to Leeds and Bradford.
