A van up to 2.5 tonnes GVW is not covered by EU tachograph rules in international transport. From 1 July 2026 the obligation covers vans above 2.5 up to 3.5 t in international carriage for hire or reward; our 3.5 t fleet already carries second-generation smart tachographs, and vans up to 2.5 t remain the fastest express option to the UK.
Where does the exemption for vans up to 2.5 t come from?
The EU driving time and tachograph regulations cover goods transport by vehicles above a defined weight. The Mobility Package extended them to vans above 2.5 t GVW in international carriage for hire or reward, with the tachograph obligation from 1 July 2026. Vehicles up to 2.5 t GVW stayed outside this regime: a van in this class runs without a tachograph and without the fixed rest windows the regulation imposes. What does no tachograph actually give an express run?
Time. The route from Poland to England is roughly 1,600-1,800 km including the crossing. A tachograph-bound vehicle must fit breaks and rests into that distance exactly as the regulation dictates. A van up to 2.5 t is planned more flexibly, which on urgent shipments buys an advantage measured in hours; with a two-driver relay the vehicle barely stops. Flexibility does not mean driving without limits: our drivers work to safety rules and a route plan, and night legs are split so fatigue never drives the van. What fits in a 2.5 t van and when to choose it?
- Load: shipments up to about a tonne, usually a few pallets or crates, depending on the body.
- Deadline: delivery from 24 hours after loading, depending on the collection point and destination.
- Nature: spare parts, production components, documentation, prototypes, samples.
- Alternatives: a bigger lot or a less urgent deadline points to a 3.5 t van, a rigid truck or space on a linehaul vehicle.
Vans of 2.5-3.5 t: what changed from July 2026?
International carriage for hire or reward in a van above 2.5 t GVW now requires a second-generation smart tachograph and full compliance with driving time and rest rules. Our 3.5 t vans carry Smart Tacho G2V2 units and run under the new regime, so the client chooses between the small van's speed and the bigger van's capacity with no compliance risk on either side. Insurance: a small van, full protection
Express shipments are often high value in low volume: electronics, prototypes, parts holding up production. So the scope of cover with us does not depend on vehicle size: carriage runs under the carrier's liability policy of EUR 1,000,000, and for cargo whose value exceeds the CMR convention's carrier liability limits we arrange dedicated CARGO cover for the specific transport. What we honestly do not promise
A tachograph-free van does not suspend physics or ferry timetables. Delivery in 24 hours is realistic with a favourable setup: morning loading, a destination in England, a calm crossing. A winter storm on the Channel, a border check or a late evening loading can add hours beyond our control. So instead of a round promise: you get a plan with concrete hours before the order is confirmed, and a phone call whenever anything changes en route. That rule holds across our whole fleet, from the van to the articulated lorry.
When is the 2.5 t van the wrong choice?
- Cargo heavier than about a tonne or bulkier than a few pallets: then a 3.5 t van, a rigid or an articulated lorry.
- Goods needing controlled temperature: they travel in a reefer, not a standard van.
- Full-scale ADR carriage: it requires a properly equipped vehicle and documents.
- A shipment without time pressure: space on a linehaul truck is simply cheaper.
Vehicle selection is always an equation of three variables: weight, volume and deadline. The express van wins when the deadline rules and the load is compact; it loses on price wherever time is not pressing. We say honestly which option makes sense, even when it means a cheaper order: a client who once got the right recommendation comes back with the next shipments.
