Express LTL or a dedicated van, which to choose

A comparison of express LTL and a dedicated van to the UK on cost, time and transhipment risk, and when to choose each.

Express LTL combines your consignment with others on a fixed, fast departure, so you share the cost and pay for the space used. A dedicated van carries only your goods directly, without transhipment, but usually costs more. The choice depends on urgency, cargo sensitivity and the transhipment risk you accept.

When to choose which

  • Express LTL: a few pallets, cost over full directness, you accept consolidation.
  • Dedicated van: critical deadline, sensitive cargo, zero transhipments, a single delivery address.
  • Transhipment risk: higher with LTL, minimal with a van.
  • Time: a van is usually faster door-to-door; LTL is predictable thanks to fixed departures.
Transhipment is moving goods between vehicles en route; each such point raises the risk of damage and delay.
