Staffordshire County Showground lies on Weston Road near Stafford, postcode ST18 0BD, on the A518 four miles from the town. It is run by the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society. The venue publishes 10,800 sqm of exhibition space and a hundred acres of outdoor ground, and for its main hall it states plainly that three roller shutter doors provide HGV vehicle access.
M6 junction 14 and four miles of the A518
The venue gives its directions briefly and precisely: leave the motorway at junction 14, then follow the signs; the venue itself sits on the A518 running from Stafford to Uttoxeter, four miles from the town. It also publishes road distances to major centres, including thirty-two miles to Birmingham and a hundred and forty-five to London.
The M6 is the main north-south axis of western England, so a load running from the southern ports to the north uses it anyway. Newark sits on the eastern axis and Stafford on the western one, and on a route covering several drops that difference settles the order of the addresses. Bingley Hall and three roller shutter doors
Bingley Hall is the venue main space: over 6,000 sqm gross plus 1,800 sqm in two annexes, with a further 3,000 sqm available through a marquee tunnel linking it to the other halls. For it the venue lists three roller shutter doors providing HGV vehicle access, and a balcony 7.25 metres wide running along three sides, reached by an external ramp that allows vehicle access.
That last element deserves its own attention. A ramp to the balcony means a display on the upper level does not have to be carried up stairs or taken up in a lift: it can be driven up. Three medium halls, each with its own access
The Prestwood Centre, the Argyle Centre and the Sandylands Centre each offer over 1,000 sqm, and over 3,000 sqm combined. The venue states that each hall has separate vehicular access through a roller shutter door, with exhibitor parking at the rear. The Margaret Everton Pavilion of 590 sqm has a roller shutter door at the rear described plainly as ideal for unloading, beside a tarmac car park.
A layout in which each hall has its own access changes how traffic runs during build-up. There is no single queue at a single gate but parallel streams, and an exhibitor is given the entrance belonging to their hall. What the venue does not publish
Despite describing access well, the venue gives no roller shutter door dimensions, no hall heights and no floor type or loading capacity. It does publish a floor plans and technical specifications page, but the documents there cover the conference rooms rather than the exhibition halls; hall plans are supplied on request.
The practical conclusion: the statement "HGV vehicle access" is enough for an outline plan but not for choosing a specific rig with a tall exhibit. We confirm the door height before departure, not on arrival.
The ground and the car parks
The venue quotes a hundred acres of outdoor space, free parking and several separate car parks: the main site for up to four thousand cars, the Weston and Stafford car parks on either side of the main ground totalling twenty-three acres, twenty acres opposite the main entrance linked by a subway under the A518, and a tarmac car park by the members pavilion. The subway serves pedestrians, so for freight what matters is which side of the A518 the nominated entrance is on.
Zones and restrictions
No charging clean air zone applies around Stafford. Birmingham does matter, though, thirty-two miles away and running a zone that also covers lorries; on a route from the south through the Midlands that has to be costed. What to settle before arrival
- The hall name, because each has its own access.
- The roller shutter door height for that hall, because the venue does not publish it.
- Whether the stand is at hall level or on the Bingley Hall balcony.
- Which side of the A518 the nominated entrance is on.
- Who supplies the forklift and where the vehicle waits after unloading.
- Whether a route from the south crosses the Birmingham zone.
What we do at our end
We collect stands and exhibits in Poland, and from exhibitors in Czechia, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary we gather the load through our hub. At the Kielce base, about 4 km from the fairground and open around the clock, we assemble a stand into one consignment before departure. A groupage vehicle waits for the next scheduled line departure. Clearances run in cooperation with the customs agencies we work with regularly on both sides. On the British side the load usually passes through a cross-dock at our warehouse in Milton Keynes, which gives two transhipments across the route. The last leg is planned around the western axis of the country and around junction 14 of the M6, the exit the venue itself publishes. Before departure we settle the hall name and which side of the A518 the entrance sits on, because that decides which roller shutter door the vehicle pulls up to and whether a route from the south crosses the Birmingham clean air zone. We commit to an hour at the gate rather than an hour of unloading.
Groupage or a dedicated vehicle
The threshold runs at roughly a third of a trailer, about twelve pallets. At Stafford an argument appears that single-gate venues do not offer: since each hall has its own access and Bingley Hall takes HGVs, a dedicated vehicle unloads at the stand and leaves rather than queuing for a shared dock.
