Stowaways in the trailer — what to do with the cargo

What to do when stowaways are found in the trailer: the risk, inspection before distribution and handling food.

If stowaways were in the trailer, the cargo must be treated as potentially tampered and sent for inspection before any further distribution. OPTIMUS TRANSPORT checks the state of the goods, assesses fitness for sale or consumption, performs a repack and prepares photo documentation for the client and the insurer.

What to do

  • Secure the trailer and do not start distribution.
  • Send the goods for inspection and a fitness assessment.
  • Repack and rebuild pallets if needed.
  • Produce a photo report for the claim.
Tampered cargo is goods whose integrity may have been compromised by access of unauthorised people.

For food, the precautionary principle and safety apply (Regulation (EC) No 178/2002) — doubtful goods should not reach the market. See cargo inspection.
