ADR classes 1 to 9, a short overview

What the ADR hazard classes from 1 to 9 are, what they mean and how they shape what we can carry and the limits that apply.

ADR splits dangerous goods into hazard classes from 1 to 9. The class follows the main type of risk and governs marking, documents and the rules of carriage. Some goods we carry without trouble, others need extra conditions or are excluded, so we assess each shipment individually.

ADR classes in brief

  • 1 explosive substances and articles.
  • 2 gases.
  • 3 flammable liquids.
  • 4 flammable solids, self-reactive and water-reactive substances.
  • 5 oxidising substances and organic peroxides.
  • 6 toxic and infectious substances.
  • 7 radioactive material.
  • 8 corrosive substances.
  • 9 miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles.
An ADR class assigns goods to a hazard group that determines the requirements for packaging, marking and carriage.
