The Dunkirk–Dover crossing, how it works and what to remember

How the Dunkirk–Dover ferry crossing runs, what the GMR at the border is and what checks may await the driver.

The Dunkirk–Dover crossing is the ferry link from France to the United Kingdom used in road transport. Before boarding, the driver must hold a valid GMR in the GVMS system, so GB import documents and clearance must be ready in advance — without them the GMR cannot be created and the truck cannot board.

What to remember

  • The GMR prepared before reaching the port, based on GB import documents.
  • Possible customs and border checks on both sides.
  • A time buffer for ferry booking and any queues.
  • Transport documents and declarations consistent with the GMR.
GMR (Goods Movement Reference) is the movement number in the GVMS system the driver uses to cross into the UK.

At OPTIMUS TRANSPORT we prepare the GMR and run clearance for the crossing. See customs clearance.
